Save: duplicate cover
7 min readDouble insurance checklist: stop paying twice for the same risk
Duplicate cover is so common that most people do not notice it. A breakdown membership and a breakdown module on the car policy. Outside-home contents cover and baggage cover on the travel policy. Legal expenses through a union and a separate policy. Each of those combinations typically costs €50 to €150 extra per year — without any benefit at the time of a claim. Slashing overlap means instant saving.

Why duplicate cover almost never pays out twice
Two policies for the same risk are allowed, but you will never receive more than the actual loss. If you have €1,000 in damage and two policies each cover €1,000, the insurers divide the liability between them. You end up with the same €1,000 — but you paid premium twice.
That makes removing duplicate modules nearly risk-free, as long as you keep the stronger policy and do not remove your only safety net.
The four most common overlaps
Breakdown: membership versus policy module
An ANWB Roadside Assistance membership or equivalent costs roughly €80–130 per year. A breakdown add-on on car insurance costs roughly €50–90 per year. Check whether both cover the same geographic area and service level. Keep the broadest and cheapest.
Outside-home cover versus travel baggage
Outside-home cover on a contents policy covers your laptop or bike away from the home. Baggage cover on a travel policy does the same on a trip. Read the geographic limits and payout maximums of both — you will usually spot which is broader within minutes.
Medical abroad: health versus travel
Basic Dutch health insurance covers emergency medical care abroad up to the Dutch rate. Travel insurance covers the difference up to the real cost. That combination is useful and not a real overlap — only a supplementary health add-on with the same module creates genuine duplication.
Legal expenses: policy versus union or collective
Do you have legal aid for employment disputes through a union, employer or collective scheme? Then the work-and-income module in your personal policy is duplicate. Consumer and housing modules usually are not.
Cut with care
- Compare limits and geographic reach before you cut. The cheapest module is not always the most restricted one.
- Remove the module, not the entire policy. You rarely need to cancel a full insurance to eliminate overlap.
- Check cancellation dates and contract terms for memberships such as ANWB.
- Keep written proof of cancellation so duplicate premium does not accidentally keep running.
Final check before you cancel
When in doubt, put both policies side by side. Look at limit, deductible, geographic reach and what is excluded. That usually shows which one to remove within five minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep two policies for the same risk?
Yes, but you will never receive more than the actual loss. Two policies do not mean a double payout.
Where is overlap most common?
Breakdown cover, outside-home contents versus travel baggage and legal expenses through work or a union are by far the most frequent overlaps.
Do I have to cancel the whole policy if one module overlaps?
No. Usually you can switch off only the duplicate module and leave the rest of the policy intact.
How do I decide which policy to keep?
Compare payout limit, geographic reach, exclusions and price. Keep the one with the highest limit for the lowest total cost.
