Situation: solar panels

Solar panel insurance: what should you arrange first?

Solar panels look like a technical detail, but for your damage insurance they make a big difference. How the panels are mounted often determines which policy should carry them. Storm, hail, theft and damage to the roof structure also deserve a proper check in advance.

The mounting method usually decides the policy

Solar panels that are fixed to the roof are often treated as part of the house and therefore fall under buildings insurance. Panels on ballast, for example on a flat roof, may be treated by some insurers as contents instead. The attachment method is therefore not a detail, but the key to the cover.

Always ask explicitly how your installation is classified. That tells you immediately where the value belongs and prevents a claim from ending up on the wrong policy.

Storm, hail and theft are not handled equally

Not every policy handles storm or hail in the same way. Theft or vandalism of panels, inverters and mounting parts can also depend on the location and security of the installation. If a panel comes loose and damages the roof or facade, you want to know whether that consequential damage is also covered.

An installer warranty is not the same as insurance cover. Warranty tells you what the supplier repairs; it does not cover the loss you suffer in a storm or burglary. Keep those two strictly separate.

Inverter, wiring and battery

The panels are not the only valuable parts. The inverter, wiring, optimizers and any home battery also affect the risk and the insured value. If those parts are outside, in a shed or in a garage, the insurer may set extra conditions for theft and vandalism.

Check that all components are included in the rebuild or home value calculation. That prevents a relatively small item from falling outside the policy while still stopping the system from working.

Have the solar policy reviewed independently

An independent review quickly shows whether the panels belong on buildings or contents cover and whether the rest of the home package still fits. You get a practical comparison without your request being resold.

Frequently asked questions

Are solar panels always covered under buildings insurance?

No. Fixed panels often are, but ballasted or loosely placed systems can be treated as contents by some insurers.

Is hail damage to solar panels insured?

Often yes, but not every policy treats storm and hail the same way. Check the exact wording of your insurer.

Should I also report the inverter and battery?

Yes. Those parts are valuable and may face different conditions if they are outdoors, in a shed or in a garage.

Will my request go to several companies?

No. Your request goes to one independent advice firm. PolisMoment does not resell your details to multiple parties.
