Situation: child leaving home
6 min readInsurance when a child leaves home: what should you arrange?
When a child leaves home, the insurance picture changes faster than many parents expect. Family liability cover, the contents policy at the old address and the belongings in the first new home all need a separate check. Handle that on time so the move does not become a cover dispute.

Liability: when does family cover still apply?
Many parents think a child automatically needs a separate liability policy, but that depends on the situation. A child who is still studying full-time and is not married often remains on the family liability policy. If your child starts working, living with a partner or living independently without that student status, a separate AVP is usually the smarter choice.
So do not only look at the key handover date. Look at the child's actual life situation, because that is what often decides whether the family cover can continue.
First home: contents and moving cover
As soon as your child has their own room, studio or apartment, the contents belong on their own policy. The items at the old address and the belongings moving to the new one need a temporary overlap, and that transition should be covered properly. Think furniture, laptop, bike, clothes and small electronics.
The actual move is often where misunderstandings begin. Contents can be covered at the old and the new address, but not necessarily while loading or driving. Make clear in advance what happens on moving day.
A new home brings a new risk profile
A private studio has different risk conditions than the family home. The way valuables are stored and secured can affect theft or damage cover. That is another reason to move the contents to an own policy instead of leaving everything on the parental household cover.
If old policies keep running after the child already forms a separate household, you pay twice for the same risk. It is better to phase out the old policy once the new one is active and correct.
Have the new household setup reviewed independently
An independent review makes clear where family liability still applies, where an own contents policy is needed and how the move cover should overlap. Your request stays with one advice firm and is not sent to multiple parties.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child always need a separate liability policy when moving out?
Not always. If the child is still a full-time student and not married, family cover often continues. Once that changes, an own liability policy is usually better.
Should the contents policy start on moving day?
Yes, ideally. That gives you a clean transition between the old and the new household and avoids a gap in cover.
Are belongings automatically insured during the move?
Not always. There is often cover at the old and new address, but transport damage can be limited or excluded. Check that in advance.
Will my request be sent to multiple advisors?
No. Your request goes to one independent advice firm. PolisMoment does not resell your details.
