Situation: moving home

Insurance after moving home: what should you update first?

Moving home changes more than your address. Your belongings sit in two places for a while, the risk of damage during lifting and loading increases, and your new postcode can affect premium and security requirements. It is smarter to tighten the damage insurance first and only then finish the moving boxes.

Report the move to your insurer early

Share your new address as soon as possible. Many damage policies allow a transition period in which your belongings are covered at both the old and the new address, often 30 to 60 days if the move was reported on time. If you wait too long, the insurer may treat only the old address as active.

Your new postcode can also change the premium and the conditions. Urban areas often carry a higher burglary risk than a village or suburban street. A move is therefore not just admin; it is also the right time to reassess the risk profile.

Contents during packing and transport

Most contents policies cover the old and new location, but not the actual lifting and transport by default. If a cupboard falls, a TV is dropped, or a box is damaged in the moving van, that can be outside standard cover. A professional mover often has its own transport cover; if you move yourself, read the policy wording carefully.

Temporary storage also deserves attention. Moving boxes, tools and loose furniture are sometimes only partially covered. Take photos of valuables before the move and note serial numbers for electronics so you can show what was lost or damaged.

Liability and car insurance at the new address

Your personal liability cover remains important during a move. If you damage a stairwell, a lift, a parked car or a neighbor's property, you want to know how the policy will respond. Also check whether your motor policy still fits the new use: street parking, a different garage or extra mileage can matter to the insurer.

If you already hold several policies with one insurer, a move is a good moment to see whether a package still makes sense. A bundle can be useful, but only if the coverage still fits the new situation.

Have the move package reviewed independently

An independent check helps you avoid duplicate cover, thin cover or unnecessary premium. You get a practical comparison of contents, liability, motor and any package discount, without your request being sold to multiple parties.

Frequently asked questions

When should I tell my insurer that I am moving?

As early as possible, ideally before moving day. That allows the insurer to process the old and new address and any transition cover correctly.

Are my belongings always covered while moving?

Not always. There is often cover at the old and new location, but lifting and transport damage is frequently excluded from the standard policy. Check the transport clause explicitly.

Do I need to update my car insurance when I move?

Often yes, because postcode, parking and use can all affect risk and premium. Include it in the same review.

Will my request be sent to several providers?

No. Your request goes to one independent advice firm. PolisMoment does not resell your details to multiple parties.
