Situation: new job or freelance

Insurance for a new job or freelance switch: what should change too?

A new job or the move to freelance work changes more than your schedule. You may drive more for work, carry expensive equipment, or face different liability questions. That is why it makes sense to line up your current insurance with the way you will actually work now.

Car: does the new job change how you use it?

If you will drive more to clients, carry tools or demo material, or use the car differently than before, you want to know whether the motor policy still accepts that use. More kilometers, a different parking pattern or business-related use can all matter for premium and conditions.

A lease car, shared car or second family car also deserves a review. The question is not only what the premium does, but whether the terms still fit the actual use.

Equipment, laptop and home office

Do you work from home or carry a laptop, camera, tablet or tools around? Then you need to know what the contents policy and any out-of-home cover do. A standard private policy is often less generous for items used mainly for work.

Also check whether items kept in a car, locker or work room are properly included. Work gear is often more valuable than people think, and can quietly fall outside the standard cover.

From employee to freelancer: think liability too

If you become self-employed, liability changes most of all. A private AVP does not cover business damage. Depending on your work, a business liability policy (AVB) may be needed for physical damage, and a professional liability policy (BAV) for financial loss caused by professional errors or advice.

That is still damage insurance, just with a business label. The key is not whether your private policy can stay on its own, but which business cover you need next to it (see our guide for starting as a freelancer).

Have the work change reviewed independently

An independent review helps line up the car, contents, work equipment and any business liability with your new job pattern. You get a comparison without your details being sold on to multiple parties.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tell my car insurer about the new job?

Often yes, especially if you will drive more kilometers or use the car differently. Check whether the new use still fits the policy.

Does my contents policy cover my work laptop or tools?

Not always fully. Work items often have limits or restrictions, and out-of-home cover may be needed.

Do I need extra liability insurance when I become freelance?

Often yes. A private AVP does not cover business damage. Depending on your work, AVB or BAV cover may be needed.

Will my details be passed to several firms?

No. Your request goes to one independent advice firm. PolisMoment does not resell your details to multiple parties.
