Savings: personal liability insurance
7 min readPersonal liability insurance in the Netherlands without commission
Personal liability insurance is often cheap, which is exactly why people tend to look at it too quickly. An accident can be tiny: a broken laptop, a damaged pair of glasses, a knocked-over vase, damage caused by a child or pet. Because the premium seems low, it is even more important to know what the policy does and does not cover. A commission-free comparison prevents you from focusing only on price while the conditions stay weak.

What personal liability insurance does and does not cover
Personal liability insurance covers damage to other people for which you are privately liable. That can include property damage as well as injury. It is meant for private life: at home, on the road or while visiting someone. Damage caused intentionally, through business activities or in certain high-risk situations can be excluded.
Because the premium is often low, people sometimes forget that the real value is in the cover. A small mistake can otherwise lead to a bill much larger than the annual premium ever was.
Family cover, children and pets
- Check whether partner and children are included automatically.
- Read how damage caused by pets is treated.
- See whether guests, babysitting or students living away from home are covered.
- Ask about the rules for borrowed items, such as a laptop or bicycle.
Why a commission-free comparison still matters here
Even a cheap policy should be checked for content. A commission-free review helps you see whether the low premium comes with a narrow exclusion or a too-tight family definition. That matters because personal liability insurance is often only tested after a claim.
Step 1: Check who is covered
Review partner, children, pets and any guest or babysitting situations.
Step 2: Read the exclusions
Look carefully at intent, borrowed items, sports and occasional jobs for others.
Step 3: Compare premium with certainty
A few euros extra per year can be worth it if the policy is clearer and broader.

Frequently asked questions
Is personal liability insurance mandatory in the Netherlands?
Usually not for private individuals, but it is strongly recommended. A small accident can create a large bill, especially if injury or expensive property is involved.
Are children covered under the parents' policy?
Often yes, but check the policy wording. Some policies have a clear family definition and specific rules for children living away from home or studying elsewhere.
Does AVP also cover borrowed items?
Not always. Borrowed items, rented items and certain usage situations may have separate rules. Read that carefully before choosing only on price.
Does PolisMoment give AVP advice itself?
No. PolisMoment does not give insurance advice and does not broker policies. You are connected to one independent firm for a free, non-binding check.
