Commission-free Dutch insurance advice: cheaper, but only if the cover still fits

With many Dutch non-life insurance policies, part of the premium quietly pays an ongoing commission to the intermediary. Commission-free advice removes that incentive: you do not pay through a recurring premium surcharge, and the adviser has no reason to recommend a larger package than needed.

What does commission-free mean for Dutch insurance?

In a traditional policy, part of your premium can be used as payment for the intermediary. You may not see that amount separately on your invoice, but it is built into the price. With commission-free advice, that ongoing commission is not the adviser's business model.

For you, that has two effects: the premium can be lower, and the advice is less driven by which policy or cover pays the highest fee.

How much can you save?

The exact saving depends on your current insurer, your package, deductible, claim-free years and which cover you actually need. Based on our experience, we often see savings around €300 per year when someone switches to a suitable commission-free offer.

When is a commission-free check most useful?

  • You have had the same package for years: premiums and conditions change, and so does your situation.
  • Your household or home changed: moving in together, a baby, buying a home or renovating can make your package expensive or incorrect.
  • You have several separate policies: contents, liability, car, travel and legal expenses can often be arranged more efficiently.
  • You are not sure what you need: no car means no car insurance; no need for legal expenses cover means it should not be added automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Is commission-free advice always cheaper?

Not always, but for comparable non-life insurance we often see lower premiums because there is no ongoing commission built into the premium. The result depends on your current package and situation.

Can I save money without weakening my cover?

Yes, that is the point. The adviser compares not only price, but also what is and is not insured, so you do not become cheaper by losing important cover.
